Atlas Roofing Now Offers Up to a 160 MPH Wind Warranty: What Charleston Homeowners Should Know
Living in Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry means your roof NEEDS to be prepared for more than everyday rain and sunshine. Tropical storms, hurricanes, high winds, heavy rain, heat, and humidity are all part of owning a home along the coast.
That makes choosing the right roofing system and the right contractor to install it especially important.
As of October 1, 2026, qualifying Atlas Signature Select® Roofing Systems are now eligible for Limited Wind Warranty coverage of up to 160 MPH when installed according to Atlas’s enhanced installation requirements.
For Charleston-area homeowners considering a roof replacement, this is an important update that provides another reason to look beyond the shingle itself and consider the entire roofing system and how it is installed.
What’s Changing With the Atlas Wind Warranty?
Atlas Roofing Corporation announced that qualifying Signature Select Roofing Systems can now receive Limited Wind Warranty coverage of up to 160 MPH.
Previously, Atlas’s standard Limited Wind Warranty coverage included:
- Up to 130 MPH for Pinnacle® Impact shingles
- Up to 130 MPH for Pinnacle® Sun shingles
- Up to 130 MPH for Pinnacle® Pristine shingles
- Up to 150 MPH for StormMaster® Shake shingles
Under the new program, qualifying Atlas Signature Select Roofing Systems that meet the manufacturer’s enhanced installation requirements may be eligible for coverage of up to 160 MPH.
For homeowners in coastal South Carolina, where wind performance is an important consideration when selecting roofing materials, that’s a significant enhancement.
What Does a 160 MPH Wind Warranty Mean?
It’s important to understand that a manufacturer’s wind warranty is not the same thing as a guarantee that a roof cannot sustain damage in 160 MPH winds.
Instead, the Limited Wind Warranty provides coverage according to Atlas’s specific warranty terms, conditions, exclusions, installation requirements, and eligible products.
That’s an important distinction.
Roof performance during severe weather can be affected by numerous factors, including the home’s construction, roof design, age, installation, surrounding conditions, debris impacts, and the nature of the storm itself.
What the enhanced warranty does demonstrate is Atlas’s confidence in qualifying roofing systems when the complete system is installed according to its specified requirements. Just as importantly, it highlights why choosing the right roofing contractor matters.
A roofing system is more than the shingles you see from the street. Its performance depends heavily on the quality of the installation, the components used, proper fastening, flashing, ventilation, underlayment, starter shingles, and attention to manufacturer specifications.
That’s why homeowners should consider a contractor’s experience, credentials, manufacturer certifications, and history in the local market when comparing roofing companies.
New Beginnings Construction has been serving Charleston and the Lowcountry for nearly 20 years. During that time, we’ve worked through the conditions that are unique to coastal South Carolina — from high winds and tropical storms to intense heat, humidity, heavy rain, and wind-driven water.
That experience matters.
An established contractor understands that installing a roof isn’t simply about completing the job quickly. It’s about understanding local building requirements, following manufacturer specifications, using compatible roofing components, documenting the installation, and making sure the homeowner receives the warranty coverage their roofing system is designed to qualify for.
As an Atlas PRO+™ Diamond Select Contractor, New Beginnings Construction has demonstrated experience with Atlas roofing systems and has access to enhanced warranty options available through the Atlas contractor program.
Homeowners should also think about who will be there after the roof is installed. A manufacturer’s warranty is one part of protecting your investment, but choosing an established local contractor gives you a company you can call if questions or concerns arise years down the road.
When you’re investing in a roof expected to protect your home for decades, choosing the lowest estimate isn’t always the same as choosing the best value. Look at the complete roofing system, the warranty being offered, the contractor’s credentials, how long they’ve served your community, and the installation standards behind the finished roof.
A strong warranty starts with a roofing system installed correctly — and that starts with choosing an experienced contractor.
The Entire Roofing System Matters
One of the biggest misconceptions homeowners have when replacing a roof is that choosing a high-quality shingle is all that matters. News flash….It isn’t.
A roof is a complete system made up of multiple components working together to protect your home.
That’s why Atlas’s enhanced wind warranty isn’t based solely on which shingle you purchase. The roofing system must meet specific installation requirements to qualify.
One particularly important requirement is the installation of Atlas Pro-Cut® Starter shingles along both the eave and the rake of the roof.
Why does starter shingle placement matter?
The edges of your roof are particularly important when it comes to wind.
When high winds move across a home, uplift forces can affect shingles along roof edges. Properly installed starter shingles help provide the adhesion and fastening needed at these critical areas of the roofing system.
Installing the correct components in the correct locations is part of building a roofing system designed to perform as intended.
Which Atlas Roofing Systems Qualify?
According to Atlas, eligible systems include:
- Signature Select®
- Signature Select Plus
- Signature Select Pro
- Signature Select Pro10
- Signature Select Pro25
The roof must meet Atlas’s applicable warranty and installation requirements to qualify for the enhanced coverage.
Qualifying Atlas shingles featuring 3M™ Scotchgard™ Protector may be eligible for the enhanced 160 MPH Limited Wind Warranty when incorporated into an eligible Signature Select Roofing System and installed according to Atlas requirements.
Homeowners should always verify the specific warranty available for their chosen roofing system before installation.
Why This Matters for Charleston and Lowcountry Homeowners
Roofing in Charleston isn’t the same as roofing in every part of the country.
Our coastal environment means homeowners have to consider wind, wind-driven rain, tropical weather, intense UV exposure, heat, humidity, and severe storms when making decisions about their roof.
That’s one reason New Beginnings Construction takes a complete-system approach to roof replacement.
A roofing system is only as good as the installation behind it.
Details like starter shingles, underlayment, flashing, ventilation, drip edge, pipe boots, fastening patterns, and manufacturer installation specifications may not be the most exciting parts of a new roof, but they’re critical to its long-term performance.
Why We Install Atlas Roofing Systems
At New Beginnings Construction, we’re proud to install Atlas roofing products throughout Charleston and the surrounding Lowcountry.
Atlas Pinnacle® Pristine shingles are manufactured with 3M™ Scotchgard™ Protector, which helps prevent the ugly black streaks caused by algae that homeowners commonly see on roofs throughout humid climates like ours.
But the shingles are only one piece of the equation.
We focus on installing the roofing system correctly from the roof deck up, using quality materials and manufacturer-approved components designed to work together.
As an Atlas PRO+™ Diamond Select Contractor, New Beginnings Construction can offer qualifying homeowners enhanced Atlas roofing system warranty options that aren’t available through every roofing contractor.
Your Roofing Contractor Matters Just as Much as Your Shingle
A premium roofing product can still underperform when it’s installed incorrectly.
When comparing roofing estimates, homeowners should ask more than:
“What shingle are you installing?”
Ask questions like:
- What complete roofing system are you installing?
- Which starter shingles will be used?
- Will starter shingles be installed at both the eaves and rakes?
- What type of underlayment will be installed?
- How will flashing and roof penetrations be addressed?
- What ventilation system will be used?
- Is the contractor certified by the manufacturer?
- Which manufacturer warranties will my roof qualify for?
- Will my warranty be registered after installation?
These details can help you understand why two roofing estimates using what appears to be the “same shingle” may actually represent very different roofing systems.
