How to Know When It’s Time to Use It (and How to Tell the Difference Between Help and Hype)

When a Roofing Company Is Doing It Right

If someone demands you sign a contract on the spot or promises “a free roof guaranteed,” be cautious. A real inspection, policy and claim evaluation should come first. 

2️⃣ They say you don’t have to pay your deductible (or promise to cover it). 
This is insurance fraud — and a major red flag. You’re always responsible for your deductible, and legitimate contractors will never manipulate that number. 

3️⃣ They can’t show local credentials or insurance. 
Storm chasers often travel from state to state. Always check for a local business license, physical address, and insurance coverage. 

4️⃣ They start work before your claim is approved. 
No reputable roofer should begin replacement until your insurance carrier has approved the scope and payout — otherwise, you risk footing the bill. 

5️⃣ They can’t explain the process clearly. 
If a contractor can’t tell you what happens after inspection, what documentation they’ll provide, or how supplements/depreciation work — walk away.  While they may be a good contractor, not knowing the correct way to navigate the insurance process can cost the homeowner thousands of dollars or work not being  covered that should be.

If your roof has legitimate storm damage and you don’t file a claim, that doesn’t make the damage disappear — it just delays the inevitable. 
Over time, small cracks, lifted shingles, or hail impacts lead to leaks and structural damage. 
By the time you’re forced to replace it, insurance may no longer cover it — leaving you with a $15,000–$30,000 out-of-pocket expense that could have been handled through coverage you’d already paid for.
